Introducing the Heritage Boxer Short

London’s iconic Victoria & Albert Museum opened the doors to its latest blockbuster exhibition earlier this month and we are honoured to be a part of it. Entitled Undressed: A Brief History of Underwear the exhibition chronicles the landmark moments in the development of underwear throughout the ages and celebrates the entrepreneurs, innovators and inventors who made them happen.

As a company whose sole focus was the manufacturing of underwear throughout its formative years, it’s fair to say that we are passionate about the subject matter. And so we were thrilled when we heard that the exhibition was scheduled to take place, and even more so when we learned that the curators had selected a pair of Sunspel boxer shorts to feature in it. Alongside the boxer shorts, an original Sunspel advertisement will be displayed, emblazoned with the somewhat risqué ‘Men Feel Swell in Sunspel’ slogan, which no doubt got tongues wagging when it was first hot off the presses back in 1949, and still manages to raise a smile in our customers today.

To commemorate the Sunspel boxer short being on show at the V&A and to our long and storied history in the manufacturing of underwear, we wanted to make something special. As with most of our new developments, the process began at our well-preserved archives, which are a constant source of inspiration to us, there, we discovered original pair of button fly boxers which would form the basis of the design.

We tweaked the fit to be the same as the boxer shorts that we have been selling for decades – cut close enough in the leg to wear underneath slim-fitting trousers, but not so close that they feel tight or restrictive, and for the waistband we used a channel construction which is the softest and most comfortable that you can get. We used our signature cotton poplin fabric in classic, crisp white and for the manufacture itself, we worked with a Nottingham-based factory, local to own factory in Long Eaton. We wanted the packaging to befit the quality of the boxer shorts themselves and so each limited edition pair of the Heritage boxer short comes neatly folded in a matching cotton pouch, branded with an original stamp from the Sunspel archive and accompanied by a postcard featuring the 1949 Sunspel advertisement.
The Sunspel Heritage boxer short is available to buy across our London stores and Online for a limited time only.
