Finding Inspiration in Our Archive
In honour of our Long Eaton factory’s 80th anniversary, we’re pleased to introduce our new 1937 Collection: a capsule collection of limited edition, archive-inspired pieces that are made from start to finish on British soil.
Our factory has been based in Long Eaton since 1937, and it is from this base that some of our most iconic styles have been developed. It’s the birthplace of the original British Boxer Short and the home of the Riviera Polo Shirt that Daniel Craig wears in Casino Royale, so it seems only right that we mark its 80th anniversary with a collection that is suitably special.
The design process for the collection began with our team exploring the Sunspel archive. They selected a few special pieces and used them as references, updating the fit and feel but holding onto charming details that have been lost over time.
For men, there is a T-Shirt made from a single panel and a Henley with mother of pearl buttons that references some of our earliest styles, while for women a cami and a French knicker with delicate scalloped edges complete the offering. The scalloping machine was brought out of retirement at the Sunspel factory to re-create these unique women’s garments; the finishing touch to a range that utilises traditional techniques to create modern clothes with a vintage sensibility.
The 1937 Collection launches on October 5th 2017 and is available exclusively in Sunspel stores and online at Sunspel.com
To mark the launch of this collection, and as a celebration of 80 years of our Long Eaton factory, we are hosting a special exhibition in our Marylebone store. Historic documents, garments, and artefacts from our extensive archive will be on display alongside photographs of our factory as it looks today.
The exhibition will run from October 5th to November 17th and is free to visit during normal store opening hours.
