Ian Fleming was the creator of one of the world’s best-loved literary heroes. His fourteen James Bond novels have sold over 100 million copies worldwide and given rise to 26 films and counting. Since 007’s debut in the 50s, both Fleming and his leading man have endured and continue to leave their mark on British culture.
The man behind our nation’s most debonair spy was himself a sharp dresser. Fleming had very exacting tastes and a particular sense of style which he passed onto Mr Bond. He favoured high-quality brands with long and deserved reputations, many of which have since become synonymous with timeless British style. Sea Island cotton, such as Sunspel’s, was a particular favourite of Fleming’s. He often wore it during his time in Jamaica where he wrote the Bond books.
This season Sunspel have partnered with The Ian Fleming Estate to create an exclusive menswear range designed in homage to the eminent author, using the same rare cotton he was so fond of. Taking cues from his classic, understated style, the collection has a refined yet casual feel that would be as fitting on a sun-drenched terrace the Caribbean then as it would be today.
The Ian Fleming™ Collection
A collection inspired by Ian Fleming was an obvious choice for Sunspel. Not only was he a fan of our fine cotton, he was also a man who was dedicated to detail who appreciated the importance of an elegant outfit – two things that Sunspel have always felt very strongly about.Crafted exclusively from our incredibly rare Sea Island Cotton fabric, the Ian Fleming™ Collection has a vintage sensibility with a contemporary twist, inspired by Fleming’s 50s style but updated with modern fits.
Sea Island Cotton
Grown and handpicked in the Caribbean, Sea Island cotton makes up only 0.0004% of the world’s cotton supplies and is coveted as one of the most luxurious materials in existence. Prized for its extra-long staple length, its fine texture and strength, silky lustre and extraordinary softness, this remarkable fabric has added an important element of luxury to Sunspel’s range since the beginning of the 20th century. Sunspel & Bond
Sunspel’s relationship with Fleming and his famous spy go further than just fabrics. When Academy Award-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming was asked to dress Daniel Craig as James Bond in the 2006 film Casino Royale, she came to Sunspel. Working together with the team in our Long Eaton factory, Hemming took a Sunspel Polo Shirt we’d been producing since the 1950s and tailored it to suit her modern man of action. A new icon was born, the reimagined Riviera Polo Shirt has been made to Bond’s specifications ever since.
