Innovating and adapting fabrics lies at the heart of Sunspel’s DNA. It’s something we’ve always done, so this year we stopped and asked ourselves: what’s the perfect fabric for staying cool in the heat? How can we bottle the mix of relaxation and refinement that the best holiday clothes deliver? What says ‘summer’ like nothing else?
With travel, escape and time off in mind, we’ve explored new fabrics for staple garments and reimagined a considered selection of our classic styles.
ORGANIC COTTON TOWELLING
There’s something uniquely relaxing about wearing towelling next to the skin, but this isn’t a fabric that’s only made for lounging. When you cut a clean contemporary polo shirt from towelling, suddenly there’s a lot more going on – a dash of classic vintage style that offsets the fabric’s pure softness.
The fabric we’ve used is lighter than traditional towelling, made from an organic cotton yarn and supremely soft. Executed across our core T-Shirts, Polo Shirts and hooded sweatshirts, the results are remarkably versatile. Ideal for relaxing on the beach but equally elegant on the plane or the hotel bar.
Our own specially developed cotton piqué fabric is designed to feel light, fine and a million miles away from the discomfort of harsh piqué.
We use this core Sunspel fabric to make our piqué Polo Shirts, and this summer we’ve reworked the shirt’s silhouette in crew neck form. The narrow, ribbed neck gives it a more contemporary feel while the mesh fabric keeps things relaxed.
The fabric was originally invented by Peter Hill, grandson of Sunspel’s founder, as an alternative to the relatively heavy piqué cottons used for Polo Shirts in the 1950s. He wanted to create something that would keep him cool and comfortable in the heat of the French Riviera. Drawing on the expertise of the local lacemaking industry, he developed a mesh fabric that is not only lightweight and breathable but also inherently soft.
The fabric brings a sartorial sophistication that complements the inherent casualness of a classic T-Shirt,
SUMMER SHIRT FABRICS
Two fabrics that make wearing a shirt effortless and easy in the summer months.
First we’ve developed an open cotton weave, drawing on mesh fabrics from our archive. The open weave offers an unexpected breathability in a button shirt, and the style combines a classic camp collar neckline with a contemporary boxy fit for an elegant and easy summer essential.
Meanwhile, we’ve taken an Italian cotton-linen mix, given it a mid-wash for a relaxed feel, and applied it to our lightweight long sleeved summer shirt. The linen brings breathability to the fabric, while the cotton gives it a softness that’s usually lacking in linen garments.
With everything from towelling to a finely tuned cotton-linen mix, you’ll find a summer fabric for every occasion. Even if the only occasion that matters is lounging by the pool.
