With summer on the horizon and thoughts of getaways to far-flung destinations, we enlisted the help of travel writer Chloe Sachdev to show us the prime locations we should be heading to this year.
There is more to summer than just luxury resorts and white sun loungers, like exploring in-the-know locales, going off the beaten track and tasting new culinary flavours. This can be in unknown far-flung destinations or popular spots closer to home, either way, there is always something new to find.
Ibiza might best be known for its nightlife, but the more clued-up travellers have always known to go off the party track for its wellness retreats, hidden swimming coves, pristine water and under-the-radar fish shacks. Stay up north in Portinatx at hotel ‘Los Enamorados’, a converted rustic boatshed now nine-room hotel, bar and restaurant owned by former basketball player Pierre Traversier and magazine editor Rozemarijn de Witte. Here you’ll find a boho crowd, drawn to the colourful terrace serving fresh Peruvian-slanted dishes, stylish sunbeds for guests and a boutique for all sorts of eclectic knick-knacks, furniture and fashion.
Or go inland and stay at La Granja, (pictured) an exclusive, farm-to-fork bolthole in the middle of the countryside, where you can expect everything from slow food workshops to mezcal moonlit parties. On the food front, explore the low-key chiringuitos and water-side spots, such as El Bigotes, Ses Boques and Es Xarcu, all offering White Isle classics such as bullit de peix (fish stew) and salt-baked fish. Be sure to have lunch at The Fish Shack, an in-the-know ad hoc ‘restaurant’ on the rocks in Talamanca serving the freshest catch of the day.
A tropical island paradise. Bali is where you’ll find everyone from surfers to shamans and artists to slow-living millennials, all drawn to the lush green jungles, consistent glassy waves and everyday spirituality. Leave the bustle of Seminyak behind, and instead head to the ‘it’ neighborhood of Canggu, where you’ll find an area that vibes a motley mix of Byron Bay’s green juice culture and LA’s edginess, flanked by dusty roads and scooter traffic jams. Check into tropical brutalist hotel, The Slow, (pictured) a 12-room hotel (all suites), art gallery and open-air bar and restaurant that has been attracting a crowd of lo-fi surfers and haute-hippies since opening in 2016.
Jamaica is not a hard sell. But there’s more to it than resorts. Let’s start with the unbeatable ramshackle bars, like Floyd’s Pelican Bar. Built on stilts in the middle of the sea, it’s worth a day trip from Black River, Treasure Beach or Parottee Point. As for food, jerk-seasoned seafood and lobster bars abound, but go off the beaten track to Stush in the Bush at Zionites Farm. It’s a charming, 15-acre higgledy-piggledy farm-to-table restaurant in St. Ann’s, near Ocho Rios and close by Montego Bay. Owned by a husband and wife team who grow their ingredients to concoct hearty, organic dishes. Stay at Goldeneye Resort in Oracabessa Bay, the jewel in the crown of Jamaica. Both upmarket and ultra-laidback, it’s a favourite of discerning travellers and visiting A-listers. It might once have been the home of author Ian Fleming, but don’t expect any kitsch Bond memorabilia. The cottages and suites across the 52 acres overlooking the crystal lagoon speak for themselves.
